Release Bottlenecks Elimination for a Healthcare Platform with a Remote Rule Engine
Overview

Our client runs a mid-market healthcare logistics platform operating across the United States, providing field-operations software for medical courier networks. The platform manages dispatch, route compliance, chain-of-custody tracking, and SLA adherence for time-critical deliveries.

With a growing courier base and expanding territory coverage, the product team faced mounting pressure to iterate faster on operational rules, such as pricing tiers, territory boundaries, courier eligibility logic, and delivery-window constraints, without blocking engineering on every update.

The structural problem was not team velocity. It was that every rule lived in compiled code, making operations permanently dependent on an engineering release cycle for decisions that had nothing to do with engineering.

Key Challenges

Every operational rule change was an engineering event, a sprint allocation, a QA cycle, an app store submission, and a 5 to 7-day wait before the update reached the couriers who needed it.

  • Hardcoded Business Logic: Changes to delivery windows, pricing, eligibility, or territories required code updates, engineering effort, QA, and production deployment, turning simple operational changes into lengthy development cycles.
  • App Store Release Dependency: Every rule change required a new app release, adding days of review delays and making urgent operational updates impossible.
  • No Rollback Capability: Reverting an incorrect rule required another full development and release cycle, with no quick way to restore a previous configuration.
  • Offline Operational Risk: Couriers working in low-connectivity areas could not reliably access the latest valid rule set, leading to inconsistent application behavior during deliveries.
  • Engineering Bottleneck: Operations teams depended on engineering prioritization and release schedules for routine rule changes, slowing business responsiveness.
  • No Versioning or Audit Trail: Rule changes lacked structured versioning, making it difficult to track active configurations, investigate issues, or support compliance requirements.
Our Solution

Ksolves, an AI-first ReactJS development company, decoupled business logic from the application binary by designing and implementing a remote JSON rule engine, a configuration layer that allows operational rules to be defined, versioned, deployed, and rolled back independently of any app store release.

  • Remote JSON Rule Engine: Ksolves decoupled business logic from the application by implementing a remote JSON rule engine, enabling operational rules to be updated without code changes or app releases.
  • Remote Rule Resolver: A cloud-hosted rule registry delivers versioned JSON rule bundles at runtime, allowing the app to apply the latest rules instantly without updating the binary.
  • Local Rule Store with Offline Fallback: The latest valid rule bundle is cached locally using Realm, ensuring consistent rule execution even in low-connectivity environments.
  • Versioned Rollback Framework: Every rule bundle is versioned, allowing operations teams to restore any previous configuration within minutes without engineering support or app store releases.
  • Structured Audit Trail: All rule deployments, version changes, and rollbacks are logged with timestamps and user attribution, providing complete traceability for operational governance and compliance.

Impact

From a 5 to 7 day engineering and app store cycle for every rule change to minutes, with full versioning, instant rollback, and no engineering dependency.

  • Operational Rule Updates Reduced from Days to Minutes: Rule changes are now deployed through the configuration layer in minutes, eliminating engineering effort and app store release cycles.
  • Rollback Time Reduced to Under 5 Minutes: Versioned rollback enables operations teams to restore any previous rule configuration within minutes without engineering involvement.
  • Reliable Offline Rule Execution: Local rule caching ensures couriers always operate on the latest valid rule set, even in low-connectivity environments.
  • Greater Operational Autonomy: Most rule updates can now be managed directly by product and operations teams, significantly reducing engineering dependency and improving responsiveness.

Conclusion

Ksolves transformed the platform from a release-dependent architecture into a configuration-driven operational system. By implementing a remote JSON rule engine with offline persistence, versioning, and instant rollback, operational rule changes can now be deployed in minutes instead of days without engineering involvement or app store releases. The result is a faster, more scalable, and more resilient healthcare logistics platform where operations teams can respond to business needs in real time while engineering remains focused on core product innovation.
