Below is a complete breakdown of what is shipping across ERPNext v16, what each change addresses, and what it means for your operations.
At Ksolves, our consultants use AI tools daily across every phase of an ERPNext development and implementation, from scoping and configuration to testing and documentation. That means your v16 migration gets done faster, with fewer surprises after go-live.
ERPNext v16 Features: What’s New
1. Accounting
Custom Financial Report Templates: Standard financial reports make it hard to meet local compliance requirements or handle complex calculations. ERPNext v16 introduces Financial Report Templates that turn P&L and Balance Sheet reports into fully customizable, formula-driven statements. You can generate multi-company reports including IFRS formats using reusable templates, no developer needed.
Purchase Expense Booking in the Purchase Cycle: Hidden purchase costs and incomplete data make validating COGS more work than it should be. ERPNext v16 introduces Purchase Expense Booking, which makes it easier to calculate COGS and find purchase costs with fewer clicks and less manual reconciliation.
Automatic Closing Stock Posting: For businesses on periodic accounting, month-end stock posting has historically required manual calculation, reconciliation, and journal entry creation. ERPNext v16 automates this: click “Get Balance” and stock differences are posted directly to the general ledger, faster and with less room for error.
Consolidated Trial Balance Report: Tracking finances across subsidiary companies previously meant pulling reports from each entity, handling currency differences manually, and merging them yourself. ERPNext v16 introduces a Consolidated Trial Balance Report that shows all child companies in a single unified view, with automatic currency conversion.
2. Manufacturing
Material Requirements Planning (MRP): Material planning in previous ERPNext versions was buried inside Production Plans and limited to Sales Orders or Material Requests. ERPNext v16 adds a dedicated MRP workflow that combines forecasts, delivery schedules, and lead times to plan exactly what to buy or produce and when, keeping inventory lean and deliveries on schedule.
Inward Subcontracting: Most ERPs handle outbound subcontracting, sending raw materials to a third party for production, but not the reverse. ERPNext v16 makes Inward Subcontracting fully functional: you can now receive raw materials from customers and manufacture finished goods on their behalf, a workflow that was manual and fragmented in v15.
Serial and Batch Traceability Report: When quality issues arise, the first question is which batch a product came from. The new Serial and Batch Traceability Report answers that in both directions: trace backward to see which raw materials and batches went into a finished product, or trace forward to see every customer or location it reached.
Stock Reservation for Work Orders: Production halts caused by missing materials are now preventable. ERPNext v16 lets you reserve materials specifically for active work orders, ensuring nothing is consumed elsewhere. From raw materials to finished goods, every step in the production plan is controlled.
Landed Cost Voucher for Subcontracting Receipts: Extra charges, freight, handling, duties, often arrive after subcontracted goods are received. ERPNext v16 lets you add these costs via Landed Cost Vouchers for Subcontracting Receipts, keeping product valuation accurate through the full cost cycle.
3. Bonus Updates
The official v16 release also ships several smaller but high-return additions:
POS Improvements, Faster, more reliable point-of-sale processing
Refined TDS, Simplified tax deducted at source workflows
Enhanced Budgeting, More granular budget controls
Improved Print Formats, Cleaner document output
Customizable Financial Statements, Flexible report layouts across accounting modules
The v16 release has been in active discussion on Frappe forums and community channels. The stability improvements and new manufacturing features are the most-cited reasons for interest, particularly among businesses running high-transaction ERPNext instances.
The Frappe team has issued an open call to beta testers: report bugs on GitHub to help make v16 the most stable release yet.
